OverXposure- A reflection on the show that started as an experiment

Doing a Podcast has been weird honestly. The idea of talking to an invisible audience, hearing myself echo in my headphones with a whole mic set up has been a totally new experience. As a novice on this platform, I’ve learned many a lesson about the production and presentation of my ideas, as well as experienced the loss of files, recording mishaps, and even having to wait for my family to fall asleep to finally have some peace and quiet in which to record. I’ve realised that there really is no ‘correct way’ of being a creator online, rather a series of experimentative processes.

During my time attempting to build a brand from scratch, I’ve been able to produce and execute work of more quality than I initially thought, even though it took some trial and error. At the beginning of my project I made the decision to not link OverXposure to any of my other social media in order to really have the opportunity to develop and garner my audience in an organic way (Also perhaps because I kind of hated hearing myself and was maybe a little embarrassed, lol anyways). This process was, of course, a little slower in terms of following, engagement, and the level of interaction I was getting. My rationale came about regardless; if and when I did get it, I could be confident that it was genuine. I took these interactions as small signs of success, my podcast being given real feedback by strangers, a separate, new audience; not associated with my name or by friends and acquaintances. From the standpoint of this perspective, I feel that I can claim my efforts to have been quite successful compared to what I expected, even though perhaps not as competitive ‘numbers-wise’ as my counterparts.

Collaborating with Cyan and her lifestyle blog brought a refreshing take to my prior experience of ‘speaking to myself’, as I now had a colleague off of whom to build rapport, authentic two-way communication, and a conversational flow. This episode felt natural and I was excited to explore the prospect of having further guests feature with me. The topic was also a big factor in our collaboration’s continuity across platforms, as we were both able to share songs we were passionate about in different, yet cohesive ‘packages’.

All in all, I never expected to have as fulfilling a time as I have had doing this project and I am especially curious about how I can explore further in presenting and creating using social media. At the beginning of this project I approached it as ‘just a temporary school thing’ but now that the door is open, I just may pursue it past the project’s completion. What an exciting change of heart!

Thanks for joining me on this wild ride guys. I hope you’ve enjoyed my efforts as much as I’ve enjoyed making them for us to share!
